Facebook is introducing a new global function that will alert consumer if an article that is over 90 days old is to be shared with them.
The feature that was announced in the blog is intended to enable people to share articles in a more timely and credible way before sharing articles, with a view to making content on the platform more 'timely.'
The feature was created to address concerns that old news items can sometimes be shared as if they are current news, says Facebook.
A news story from only a couple of years ago on a terrorist attack is posted as if it happened a lot recently and says on Facebook , for example, that it may misinterpret the current state of affairs.
This approach was not first tried by Facebook. The Guardian began last year by adding the publishing year to the thumbnails of old media articles.
It's "[it] more difficult to turn an old story into a new indignation," wrote at that point The Guardian 's editorial innovation director Chris Moran.
