FBR emails containing malicious malware are being sent to Pakistani taxpayers by hackers, according to the FBR.

After taxpayers and others across Pakistan complained of receiving fake emails about the income tax defaulters list, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) clarified on Saturday that the revenue body had not sent any e-mail. The revenue agency stated that it had received information indicating that some hackers were abusing the FBR's name.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued a warning to taxpayers that hackers are attempting to not only steal their confidential financial data, but also to hijack their networks and spy on them using malware. The cybercriminals are doing so by sending fake emails to targeted taxpayers, instructing them to search an attached Income Tax Defaulters List for their information.

Some of the emails appear to include the passwords for the attached defaulter list. The tax authority warned citizens not to open any attachments sent through fake emails because they could contain phishing and spamming attempts designed to infect users with "harmful viruses and malware."

The revenue-collection agency instructed recipients to disregard such emails and denied "any association" with the emails, which were sent from a fictitious email address, "alert@fbr.news," which is not an official FBR email address.

FBR has also given advice to taxpayers on its official website to assist them in dealing with such fake emails.
