Elon Musk says his Twitter DMs are mainly designed to exchange memes

In a free-wheeling interview with columnist Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his direct Twitter messages are mostly made up of memes, and he's not overly worried that they're hacked.

Musk's was one of over 100 high-profile Twitter accounts hacked as part of a Bitcoin scam on 15th July. The company said the attackers might have accessed some people's private direct messages and personal information in the process, but Twitter said none of those accounts had been "confirmed," as Musk's is.

I don't care that my DMs are made public, Musk told Dowd.

I mean, we can probably pick some part of my DMs that sounds bad out of context but on the whole my DMs consist mostly of memes swapping.

During the conversation with Dowd, Musk said he's got a "personal" Instagram account to see links of stuff people are sending me (paging Ashley Feinberg ...) and he thinks he may have had COVID-19 in January.

I think Covid 's truth is that if you're old and have pre-existing conditions, that's risky, he said in the interview. It's perfectly smart to have a lockdown if you're insecure, even if you're not insecure I don't think it makes sense to have a lockdown.

Musk has gone toe-toe with officials in Fremont , California, reopening the car factory of his company there in May in violation of a local shelter-in-place order. He told Dowd that he is wearing a mask on the floor of the factory.

Some of the more surprising aspects of the interview is how Dowd paints Musk's personal relationships:  Certainly, the billionaire can be a romantic. She lists some of his more high-profile relationships, including his current girlfriend Grimes, and actresses Talulah Riley and Amber Heard, but makes no mention of Musk's first wife Justine — mother of five of his sons — whom he divorced in 2008.

Musk doesn't offer a lot of interviews, so it's good to see him answering questions about SpaceX, Tesla, Facebook, AI, Twitter and that copy cat tweet he sent to Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon and Blue Roots. And in case you wondered: He's OK with President Trump calling him one of our great geniuses after SpaceX 's Crew Dragon launched in May.

I am going to take the compliment, said Musk.

So surprised we are as you are.
