Disney has recently stopped spending on Facebook ads

Disney has dramatically decreased its investment on Facebook and Instagram ads in the light of questions over the social media site enforcing its advertising policies, the Wall Street Journal reported. It follows a group of major corporations that have cut back on Facebook advertisements as part of an attempt to push Facebook to improve how it addresses hate speech and propaganda on its sites.

The month-long # StopHateforProfit boycott, organized by a coalition of civil rights organizations including the Anti-Defamation League, NAACP, Color of Change and Sleeping Giants, began on 1 July and includes companies such as Hershey, Honda, Ben & Jerry's and Verizon.

Many businesses not part of the organized boycott on Facebook advertising and other media networks included Coca-Cola, Lego, Target, and Unilever. And Microsoft has been halting its Facebook and Instagram ads through August.

According to the WSJ, Disney has stopped ads for its Disney Plus news streaming service on Facebook, and has stopped ads for its Hulu streaming service on Facebook's Instagram platform. Disney invested around $210 million on Disney Plus ads on Facebook in the US in the first half of 2020, says WSJ, and invested $16 million on Instagram for Hulu advertisements between April 15 and June 30.

Disney and Facebook did not respond to requests for feedback on Saturday. A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement last month that it is "focused on the essential work of removing hate speech and delivering crucial voter statistics."
