The winners were nominated for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, and once again streaming platforms dominated the winners. Netflix led the way with 160 reservations, with Amazon and Hulu making waves, too. Yet there are also several big new names on the list this year, with Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, and even Quibi making their first nominations for the prestigious TV awards.
Apple TV Plus was nominated for Best Actor in the Drama Series, and Jennifer Aniston was nominated for Best Actress in the Drama Series, plus two big nominations for Best Actress in the Morning Show.
Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass have both been awarded Best Supporting Actor in the Drama Series for their work in the film.
The Emmy nods have also secured three Golden Globes awards earlier this year for Best Drama and a pair of Best Actress nods for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (although the show was entirely shut out at the event) for Apple's flagship drama.
Apple has made no secret of its aim of producing award-winning television for its subscription service, which is still looking for a breakout success months after its release last fall. And a major win at the Emmys this year could help give that kind of popularity to the company.
Further surprising is The Mandalorian — the Disney Plus smash hit — who also won Emmy's nomination for Best Drama Series, the first for the new streaming service. It's pretty doubtful that The Mandalorian will take home the award — it's up against Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid 's Tale, Killing Eve, Ozark, Stranger Things, and Succession in that category — but it's still a major win for Disney.
The Mandalorian also accounted for most of Disney Plus' 18 other nominations in all categories, including Taika Waititi (seeking his latest Oscar win) for his voiceover role as IG-11, and Giancarlo Esposito for his guest appearance as Moff Gideon.
There's Quibi, finally. Its insistence on short-form content seems almost guaranteed to pay off with a win from Emmy. This year, the fledgling streaming network won 10 awards, all in short form-specific categories: eight awards for Best Actor and Best Actress in the Short Form Comedy or Drama Series categories and two for Best Short Form Series.
The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards are expected to take place on September 20th, with Jimmy Kimmel returning as the host. It is not known if this year's occurrence will be accompanied by an in-person ceremony as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
