Coca-Cola joins Facebook to block all social media ads for a break beginning July 1st

For at least 30 days beginning 1 July, Coca-Cola has announced Friday night that all of the digital advertising on social media platforms around the world has been stopping.

The move is part of a larger Facebook and InStagram boycott organized under the name "Stop Hate For Profit" by the Anti-Defamement League, the NAACP, and other organizations. Coca-Cola is a step beyond these businesses and bans all publicity on social media platforms worldwide, not only Facebook and Instagram. This suggests that the boycott will also hit Twitter, YouTube and other platforms.

The Coca-Cola company 's statement on the Coca-Cola brand's website says "Before 1 July, Coca-Cola company will stop paid advertisements on all social media platforms globally for at least 30 days." "We will take this time to reassess our advertising standards and policies to determine whether internal revisions are needed and more to remove hatred, violence, and inappropriate content from all of our social media partners. We will let them know that we expect them to be more accountable, actionable and transparent.

Earlier today, Unilever joined Verizon when before Coca-Cola 's involvement the two largest companies taking part in the boycott also announced a range of policy changes, which appear to attempt to respond to many of the late critiques of the enterprise concerning its lack of restraint of violent threats, while not explicitly in the face of boycott;

The statement of Color of Change, one of the boycott 's organizers, says that "this continues a significant trend in large brands — including UNICEWER and Verizon — pausing Facebook ads for at least July." 'Since the campaign started on June 17 by Color Of Change and its partners, including the ADL and NAACP, over 100 brands have signed in.' On Friday, Color of Charge Chairman Rashad Robinson stated that Hershey 's chocolate brand also joins the boycott.

However, while the boycott may create a wave of bad media for Facebook and Instagram, even large advertisers who pause ad spending for a month are unlikely to make a major difference on Facebook's results as the vast majority of ad revenue from small and medium-sized companies comes from direct-response ads.

"To keep the communities safe, we spend billions of dollars every year working on the review and update of our policies with external experts," said a Facebook Speaker at UNILEVER today.

We know we need to do more and we are working with civil rights groups, GARM and other specialists to develop even more tools , technology and policies to continue this struggle.
A comment request concerning Coca-Cola 's decision was not immediately answered by Facebook.

Last week launched the Stop Hate for Profit campaign, starting with popular brands like The North Face and Patagonia. After collecting the support of the ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's and the Magnolia Pictures film company, it has since gained steam with mainstream America.

Honda announced on Friday that it will join the campaign and also stop publishing on Facebook and Instagram in July. "This is in line with the values of our company, based on respect for the human person," tweeted the company.

The ADL publishes in an open letter Thursday detailing changes in the policy and approach to moderation by boycott in Facebook.

"We 're today calling on all firts not to advertise on Facebook's services in July, but to be in solidarity with our strongest American values of freedom, equality and justice," said Stop Hate For Profit advertising campaign conducted earlier this week in the Los Angeles Times. "Send Facebook a powerful message: hate, bigotry, racism, anti-Semitism, violence are never worth your profits."
