In China, smartphone shipments fell by 35% in July, compared to the government figures published on Tuesday.
Numbers suggest that demand for the handsets in China continues to be weak, despite signs of recovery following peak coronavirus, which is badly damaging for enterprises like Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and its local rivals.
According to the Chinese Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), the Chinese phone makers shipped 21.3 million telephones in July compared to 33 million a year ago.
This marks a steeper decrease than the figures of 10% and 16% respectively in May and June.
CAICT reported smartphone shipments grew in April, 17% each year, following a slump in previous months due to the health crises.
The jump then suggested a potential rebound in sales for smartphone brands in China that saw COVID-19 buying collapse.
China has almost completely reopended retail outlets after a virus-related lockdown in one of the only countries.
There is no publication of regional data from Apple and its rival smartphone brands.
