The recently formed China Broadcasting Network (CBN) aims to grow its ultra-high definition (UHD) video sector, which is seen as a possible killer application for 5G.
Zhong Zhangdui, Chief Professor at the State Main Laboratory for Rail Traffic Control and Safety at Beijing Jiaotong University, said that the establishment of CBN is extremely important in the construction of the 5G network and the growth of industrial chains for the UHD video industry.
The business was formally inaugurated on 12 October, becoming the fourth largest telecommunications provider in China with a reported capital of 101.2 billion yuan.
Along with China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, CBN was awarded a 5G licence by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in June 2019, becoming the country's fourth 5G carrier.
In May, the company signed a network building and sharing deal with China Mobile to jointly deploy and run a 700 MHz band for the 5G network.
Referring to the National Action Plan on the Growth of the UHD Video Industry between 2019 and 2022, Zhong clarified that China sees the development of the industry as a main business path for the introduction of 5G.
Zhong emphasized the value of delivering and improving UHD video content in order to promote the growth of 5G, with 4G already satisfying people's general needs for audiovisual goods.
However, this is not going to be an easy process. The UHD video industry is made up of several facets, including UHD video recording, processing, delivery, presentation and implementation. From high-end chips and storage to computing, the upstream and downstream segments of the whole business chain all need to evolve.
CBN will make use of its advantages in video capture and processing, Zhong explained. By partnering with China Mobile, it has made up for its transmission limitations, and the relationship helps both sides.
Zhong added that with the 700 MHz band, the strengths of radio and television networks and the steady growth of content production capability, CBN will help accelerate the creation of additional ties in the UHD video industry chain.
