China revises regulations to improve the safety of online minors

China has updated regulations to improve the safety of under-18s online, state news agency Xinhua announced late Saturday, requiring internet products and service providers to take steps where appropriate.

The amended regulation, voted for by the National People's Congress Standing Committee on Saturday and effective 1 June next year, specifies that internet goods and service providers can not provide minor addiction-inducing products and services, Xinhua said.

Providers of internet content, including gaming, live streaming, audio and video , and social media, shall set corresponding roles such as time and consumption restrictions for minors, the news agency reported.

Service providers must take the appropriate steps to avoid cyberbullying and parents or guardians of children who are cyberbullyed must have the right to notify service providers to edit, block or disconnect ties.

The amended legislation further obliges kindergartens and schools to disclose harassment and sexual abuse on children to public protection and education officials.
