Berlin fines for people without facial masks up to 500 Euros.

In certain Berlin public places, including public transport, face coverage is now compulsory. The Senate has now voted to punish those who break the laws with penalties of up to EUR 500.

No mask? No mask? Pay better
On Tuesday, Governing Mayor Michael Müller announced that the Senate voted to impose fines on persons who do not wear face masks in areas where they were designated compulsary. The fines range from EUR 50 to EUR 500 and those who consistently violate the law have the maximum penalty.

Like several other states of Germany, Berlin has made public transport, supermarkets and other store, tattoo salons, beauty shops and hairdressers compulsory coverings. Berlin is the largest country in Germany. "Like a ticket check," Müller said, "the Police would perform regular checks."

Some countries already impose fines for violations of the coronavirus rule, but Berlin has adopted a different approach so far. But Müller said yesterday's decision had to be made because "some still disregard the rules."

Additional loosening of coronavirus in Berlin
The decision came just as several other restrictions on coronavirus in the capital began to loosen.

On Tuesday, the Senate decided that more people could enter shops simultaneously in future. Every 20 square metres, the previous guideline for one person per 10 square metres.

Although some distance requirements (such as the rule of 1.5 meters) remain unchanged, there are also no limits for the number of people from various households who can gain access in public. More events will also be possible gradually with gatherings of up to 500 people allowed in secluded rooms from August 1. From 1st September this will rise to 750 and October 1 to 1000.
