Apple launches its own daily news podcast to compete with The Daily and others

Apple is launching a daily podcast of its own. The company announced today the show along with other audio news coming to Apple News and curated local Apple News collections, as well as the release of iOS 13.6. The show, Apple News Today, is hosted by Apple News editors Shumita Basu and Duarte Geraldino. New episodes, seven to eight minutes in length, will be released Monday through Friday, and the show will be available exclusively through Apple News and Apple Podcasts in the United States, Canada , the United Kingdom and Australia.

Apple will also release 20 audio stories a week from Apple News Plus. The stories will be voiced by professional actors, and there will be narrated long-form pieces published by well-known magazines such as Esquire, GQ, New York and Vanity Fair. Only the subscribers of Apple News Plus will have access to this. Both these stories and Apple News Today can be accessed through the audio tab at the bottom of the News app. CarPlay will also support these audio features, which means that people can listen to them while driving.

Finally, Apple says that it's launching curated local news in the Bay Area, Houston, Los Angeles , New York and San Francisco in non-audio news. They will all feature a major local newspaper and include local news coverage. The Charlotte Observer, The Idaho Stateman, The Kansas City Star, The Miami Herald, the News & Observer, and The state are now included in Apple News Plus subscriptions in the USA as well. Apple News Plus subscribers as well as The Globe and Mail are also available in Canada for the Devoir.

Apple News Today is the biggest news. This is the first major foray in the production of podcast by Apple and a particularly crowded news format. The New York Times publishes The Daily, while Today Explained releases Vox Media. The Wall Streets Journal includes The Journal. It is even more remarkable that Apple does its Apple-exclusive show.

Apple was the de facto face of open ecosystem podcasting, particularly in comparison with Spotify, which has been devoted to the development of its platform through major, exclusively publishing deals. On the other hand , Apple did not sign exclusive deals and promotes the work of other producers in its curated lists instead. This might be the start of Apple’s earnest jump into podcasting.
