Apple TV channels are no longer allowed to switch to HBO

For those who want to subscribe for HBO through Apple TV, according to 9to5Mac, HBO is no longer available as an Apple television channel. The move follows the announcement today of the new HBO Max streaming service.

Apple TV Channels first launched last year as a means of viewing content from numerous mobile media providers in one app, meaning you don't have to switch from multiple third-party applications to access specific content. But it now appears that HBO wants users to watch the content of HBO Max on the HBO Max app rather than via Apple.

Apparently, you can still view HBO on the Apple TV app if you are still paying, but it won't be changed to include HBO Max-only content according to 9to5Mac. With a deal concluded last month between Apple and WarnerMedia, you also have free access to HBO Max. And you can view HBO Max content within the Apple TV app when you have access to HBO Max.

Almost five million HBO streamers now access their subscription via the Amazon Prime Video Channels with their smooth customer experience. Unfortunately, AT&T has decided to deny access to the expanded catalog to these loyal HBO clients with the launch of HBO Max. We believe that you are entitled to new programming by the way you already use if you pay for HBO. There is a decent service to the client, and for us that is a priority.

In this statement to Engadget, WarnerMedia defended itself:

We are delighted that HBO Max is widely accessible to customers via a number of devices and distribution partners and HBOMax.com at launch. Our mission is to allow the world's most loved shows from HBO, the Warner Bro. Film and TV library and a range of hit content exclusive for HBO Max on every channel. HBO Max has the opportunity for every market. We are looking forward to agreeing deals on how consumers will access Netflix, Disney+ and Hulu on Fire tablets, and with the few remaking distribution partners like with Amazon.
