Android 11 is also a cake

In 2020, it's all cake – and Android 11 included. In an interview with All About Android via Droid Life, Android VP of engineering Dave Burke revealed the intern code title of "Red Velvet Cake."

The designation of Google's alphabetical dessert was a tradition of Android, dating back years to Android 1.5 Cupcake in 2009. But last year Google decided to deserve desserts in full for its public publishing in favor of numerical names instead of naming Android Q after a dull pastry tart or candy, starting with Android 10 and continue the upcoming release of Android 11 this autumn.

This isn't the whole story, however. As Google's Sameer Samat, VP of Android products management, said last year, the company is still introducing new Android versions with Alphabet-based, dessert-based codenames. Burke last year revealed that Android Q was internally referred to as "Quince Tart" and was probably named "Queen Cake" if it continued with the tasty titles.

This year's version of Android, called Android R under the old naming scheme, is supposed to continue the Red Velvet Cake tradition. It's going to show: all the way down is a cake.
