Amazon Prime Video is launching the Windows 10 desktop app

Amazon Prime Video's dedicated Windows 10 app is now live in the Microsoft Store , the company reported Thursday. It enables you to stream and download videos for offline viewing. While it's always been possible to stream Prime Video content through a browser like Chrome, there hasn't been a way to download videos on a Windows device so far to view them offline.

Amazon has recently increased its original streaming content to compete with rivals like Netflix and Hulu. That includes critically acclaimed shows such as Fleabag, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Homecoming.

A recent study found that the business is "actively seeking" licensing deals for live TV, and earlier this week a Watch Party feature was added in the US so that up to 100 people can stream with friends.

The Windows 10 app is free, but the Amazon Prime Video membership is $8.99 a month. Amazon Prime Subscribers, who pay $119 for their annual membership, get Prime Video for free.

The Verge 's initial check found that the Windows 10 app does not stream higher than the HD (720p) resolution, similar to the iPad edition of the app, even though it's possible to view 1080p HD through a web browser.

The download choice has three layers for video quality, Fine, Great, and Best, each of which uses progressively more room. However, the app does not indicate the corresponding resolution for each point. A 52-minute episode of Tales from the Loop at the Best Setting took about 2.74 GB of space.

According to the website, the app will stream and download up to 1080p HD, "but it can differ by content." In testing, we were unable to get better than 720p across a variety of titles, even though they are classified as "4 K UHD" in the app itself.
