9 Ways to Quickly Free Up Your Phone Space

The easiest (and surprising) way to release your phone's space.

If you've got an iPhone:

  1. Configure iCloud Images, stat.
    • Go to Settings > (your name) > iCloud > Images on your computer with iOS 10.3 or later enabled.
    • To import them to your computer, select "Download" and "Keep Originals."
    • With the "Optimize Space" setting, we will save room on your iPhone.
    • (your name) > iCloud Tap Settings. Tap Photos > Choose iPhone Storage Optimization.
  2. Purchase a Lightning MicroSD reader.
    • Please consider purchasing a lightning plug-in MicroSD Reader for newer iPhones. Basically, the deal is exactly the same as on a USB drive: plug-in, transfer files to the external memory card and now take them from the current computer and delete them, free space and avoid cloud fees. Both the reader and a MicroSD card of your choosing must be purchased. Essentially, it is a hack to imitate several Cell phones' SD card slots.
  3. Delete your apps without mercy.
    • Go to Settings
    • Go to General
    • Click on Storage & iCloud Usage
    • Tap "Manage Store" and the full report shows the apps take the most space in your application.
  4. Delete conversations from a few years ago.
    • Go to Settings
    • Go to Messages
    • Go to Message History > Keep Messages > then pick a period of 30 days, 1 year, or forever.
  5. Subscribe to Apple Music if you don't already have it.
    • Well, it's worth the money. It's $4.99 a month for students; it's $9.99 for individuals; it's $14.99 for a family package with coverage for up to six people. Pro tip: If you're an adult without your own family (or your family members using flip phones), just round up a couple of friends and share the bill.

If you have an Android app, please:

  1. Using a cloud based photo app.
    • It's pretty likely that Google Photos and Google Drive will be installed on your device by default, given Google's dominance over Android software, so you really just need to create an account.
  1. Please clear your cache.
    • Go to Settings > Storage (or System Maintenance > Storage) and pick "Optimize Now." Watch your phone clean up ad files, cached data, and more.
  1. Purge the Downloads folder.
    • In particular, check under Settings or try searching the Apps tab to find the Downloads folder.
    • Look for the Downloads folder once within your settings. Just know it's going to look a little nightmarish in there, full of loads of useless, potentially humiliating information. You were alerted.
    • There's always a way to delete files one by one, but if you've already set up a cloud-based backup process, you'll be safe to Select All and press Delete.
  1. Transfer your apps to your SD card.
    • Go to Settings
    • Go to Apps
    • Go to Application Manager
    • Then tap the app you want to move to > pick "Move to SD card."
